COL HODGES – THE VOICE OF WELLINGTON RACING
It is an outstanding feat to achieve 50 years in one profession, but to do that in the demanding job of race calling is truly remarkable.
Col Hodges, the voice of racing in the Central West and Western areas, has done just that this year and on behalf of Wellington Race Club I not only want to congratulate him, but thank him for decades of outstanding service to the club.
Col’s accurate and entertaining calls are synonymous with racing at Wellington.
After succeeding the great Ian Craig as the caller of the Wellington Boot, Col’s calls are now part of the fabric of the race – the Boot just wouldn’t be the same without Col. But whether he is calling the Wellington Boot or a maiden handicap, Col puts the same amount of professionalism into his work.
Australia has produced some legendary race callers in a craft where only a few have the skills to succeed. I have no hesitation including Col Hodges in that select group of legends.
Col received a Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours and all who know him will tell you it was richly deserved.
As well as being the “Voice of the West”, Col is the secretary of the Central District Racing Association but, more importantly, he is one of the nicest people you will ever meet on a racecourse.
That’s why the committee and many members of Wellington Race Club are honoured and proud to call him a friend.
Thanks Col and I hope your partnership with our club continues for many years to come.
